Great Heat

Today marks Great Heat, the final solar term of summer in the traditional Chinese calendar.

It is summer’s grandest, most fervent farewell. If the earlier days of summer were a gentle prelude, then Great Heat is its last, full-throated cry, given with all its might.

Sweeping in with the year’s most intense heat, it brings scorching sunlight and sultry evening breezes, displaying summer at its most extreme. All living things, in this sweltering peak, are heading toward a vibrant conclusion.

Intense heat ripens and fulfills all creation. It spurs new life to thrive vigorously, while quietly letting plants and foliage fade away. Some flourish wildly in the heat, reaching their prime; others wither gently and return to the earth. On every patch of land, the cycle of life unfolds ceaselessly.

The earth is life’s gentle mother, silently bearing witness to bloom and decline, embracing both vitality and stillness. Year after year, it nourishes all beings and gives them the strength to take root. Through spring, summer, autumn and winter, it grants freedom, letting everything grow wild and find its own way home. All life on earth takes root, blooms, fades and renews—endlessly, generation after generation.

Every solar term comes to an end; every summer draws to a close. Few things in life are perfect, and each year brings its regrets.

The wind murmurs, the water flows softly, mist in the hills lingers with reluctance, and evening breezes carry summer’s final tenderness for the world. Yet the seasons never turn back. No matter how much we may cling to it, this summer will eventually fade away.

Time moves forward, and the old summer departs. There is no need to keep looking back, nor to dwell on what has passed.

May we live up to the passion of summer and the tenderness of years, walk forward with devotion in our hearts, and welcome the cool, clear breeze of autumn.
