White Dew

White Dew marks the end of early autumn and the start of mid‑autumn. As an old folk saying goes: “On windy nights of White Dew, each passing night brings more chill.” From this point on, the sky is high with sparse clouds, the air crisp and breezy. The most poetic season of the year quietly unfolds.

First Pentad: Wild Geese Arrive

In the first pentad of White Dew, wild geese migrate southward from the north. Here “arrive” refers to their flight toward the south. Once White Dew sets in, wild geese can be seen heading south. A wild goose’s cry echoes over the frontier autumn,” vividly captures this phase.

Second Pentad: Dark Swallows Return

Dark swallows are common house swallows. These migratory birds set off for warmer southern lands to spend the winter. “Return” here means heading back south, as the swallows begin their southbound journey.

Third Pentad: Birds Hoard Provisions

The ancient character xiu means delicacies or fine food. At this third pentad, all kinds of birds store nuts and grains to prepare for winter. Yizhoushu‑Seasonal Observations records: “On White Dew, wild geese come.” It paints a picture of deepening autumn, as all living things get ready for the cold months ahead.

The dew turns white from this night; the moon shines brightest over my hometown.
