On this day, the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer, making it the longest day and the shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. As an old saying goes, “After eating the Summer Solstice noodles, the daylight shortens by a thread each day.” This moment marks the peak of yang energy, when all living things flourish and summer truly begins in earnest.

After the Summer Solstice, the weather typically turns hot, humid, and prone to sudden thunderstorms. In terms of diet, it is wise to eat light, cooling foods—such as bitter melon and winter melon—to help the body adapt to the heat. A popular custom in northern China is to enjoy chilled noodles, which are both appetising and perfectly suited to the season.
